Frequently Asked Questions

If you're not familiar with therapy, taking that brave first step can feel intimidating and nerve-wracking. Below are some questions frequently asked by new clients to help demystify the process. I am happy to discuss any further questions at your first free 20-minute consultation.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED THERAPY?

Everyone’s healing journey is different, and it is up to each individual to determine if

therapy would be a helpful tool in their life. A common measurement of when

therapy may be needed is if a mental or emotional issue, like depression, grief, or

anxiety, for example, is starting to affect your day-to-day functioning, relationships, or

job/school performance. However, some clients enter therapy for occasional checkups and a place to process short-term issues that may arise as a form of preventive care. In our one-on-one consultation, we can discuss how therapy may benefit you given your unique situation.

WHY PAY FOR THERAPY? ISN'T THAT WHAT FRIENDS/FAMILY ARE FOR?

Unlike talking out your issues with friends or family members, therapy is a safe space centered around your needs and healing. As much as we may love and rely on friends and family for support, there are many benefits to instead processing with a third-party professional whose listening and responses are solely designed to foster your healing. As a therapist, I also bring years of training, research, and clinical experience to our sessions to ensure that our work together is going to actively move toward healing.

WHAT IS THERAPY LIKE? WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IN EACH SESSION?

As we get started in your first session, there will be paperwork to discuss and sign that outlines my policies and procedures that guide our work together. Early on in therapy, I will ask a lot of questions to get a strong understanding of all possible contextual factors that may be influencing your presenting issue. Once I get a full clinical picture of what you’re struggling with, we will establish treatment goals together. In our following sessions, you can talk and I will listen, I may ask guiding questions, and I will ensure that our processing is following an evidence-based treatment protocol that will lead to healing. This may continue for many weeks or months based on your unique case. Once we reach a point where we both feel you have made progress toward your goals and are equipped to move on without therapy, we will discuss the termination process and ensure that you are comfortable moving on.

IS WHAT WE TALK ABOUT IN THERAPY CONFIDENTIAL?

Confidentiality is one of the most important principles of our therapeutic relationship, and I follow ethical and legal statutes as it relates to client confidentiality. I am only legally mandated to break confidentiality in the following scenarios:

  • If a client expresses that they are an immediate danger to themselves or other

  • If the client is engaging in abuse of a child, elder, or dependent adult

  • If the client is a victim of abuse as a child, elder, or dependent adult

  • If I am ordered to release information by a judge in a court of law

WHAT DOES THERAPY COST?

I do not currently accept insurance (Cash/private payment only). We can discuss my rates at your free 20-minute consultation.
